Enhancing the USO’s internal marketing and communications team as their
agency of record

Background

How It Began

Since 1941, the USO has strengthened America’s military service members through its mission to keep them connected to family, home, and country throughout their service to the nation.

Our relationship started with a simple ask. USO approached us to handle a single project: a direct mail campaign. The USO’s marketing and communications team quickly recognized that we could do much more. They knew we could support the marketing efforts of an organization as large as theirs with responsiveness, flexibility and collaboration.

That project was followed by requests to create impact-related infographics, corporate partnership and major gift playbooks, plus campaign development for both new and ongoing USO awareness and engagement efforts— to name just a few of our projects. Within a year, the USO selected us as their agency of record.

Challenge

How It’s Going

When working with any organization the size of the USO, we aim to become a seamless extension of their marketing team. For the USO, we sustain consistency of messaging and visual identity across every effort and for their many audiences: volunteers, individual donors, corporate partners and the general public. What matters to each audience varies, so we strategically select the communication type. For example, a volunteer toolkit, a program profile to show how dollars are spent, a corporate partner case study, or a human-interest story.

We have also augmented the frequency and reach of their communications through our combined and cohesive efforts. With Orange Element, they gain access to a pool of designers, content developers, social media experts, creative thinkers and strategists who bring their expertise and the advantage of third-party insight. Orange Element is the drone that flies overhead for the full picture and lands safely to concept and implement an attention-grabbing deliverable, like digital billboards in Times Square and a community-inspired mural in Chicago.

Where We’re Headed

Our partnership provides the USO with an agency they can trust with their brand wholeheartedly and know they can call on us for strategic guidance, insightful planning and creative energy to push their teams forward. They rely on our ability to shift our efforts as their needs change and how we quickly move projects to completion. Ultimately, our collaboration allows them to increase how often they can touch their target audiences and do it through the most effective channels. It’s a privilege to support the mission of the USO in this way.

The biggest win is stronger collaboration and coordination internally with Orange Element as an extension of our team. They have conversations among stakeholders and move projects forward. It allows us to do more with the various team members across the entire organization.
